The company

Thirty-two years of buying iron off ships and putting it back to work.

Haroon and Faruk Gundigara started Akil Corporation in 1994, buying marine machinery from the ship recycling yard at Alang, 40 km from Bhavnagar. The yard is the largest in the world and a ship arrives to be cut most days, so a steady stream of engines, gensets and spares comes off hulls and onto the beach. The firm's job has always been the same: pick the machinery worth saving, test it, store it properly, and supply it to the ship operators, power plants and rebuilders who need it.

Today that is 84 lines on the floor across 26 makers, 39 of them complete engines and gensets, held in four warehouses including a bonded, duty-free floor in the Kandla SEZ. The second generation runs the technical and commercial sides.

What we do

  1. 1Emergency spares supplyComplete engines and a wide range of spares from ready stock. Air, sea or courier, to the port or agent you name.
  2. 2Technical inspectionInspection service with techno-commercial reports before you commit, on our stock or on a unit you are buying elsewhere.
  3. 3Power solutionsGensets on turnkey, EPC and rental terms with complete output responsibility and performance guarantee.
  4. 4Ship recycling purchasesBuying machinery off hulls at Alang since 1994. If it ran on a ship, we have probably handled one.

Procedure

Nothing turns without a report

A used crankshaft is only as good as the paperwork with it. Every crankshaft in stock is checked four ways before we call it reusable, and the report ships with the part. Heads, liners, rods and pumps get the equivalent inspection on request.

Crankshafts in stock
  1. 1CalibrationEvery main journal and crank pin measured and recorded against the maker's STD and undersize tables.
  2. 2HardnessHardness test on every journal and pin surface. Values on the report.
  3. 3MPI crack testMagnetic particle inspection under UV light on all journals, pins and fillets. Non-destructive.
  4. 4Run-outCrankshaft set on V-blocks on two main journals and rotated under a dial gauge to check straightness.

People

The Gundigaras

You will speak to one of these four. There is no sales floor between you and the people who own the stock.

Come and see it.

Buyers and surveyors are welcome at Mamsa and Alang by appointment. Bhavnagar has an airport with daily flights from Mumbai; say when you land.
